The Story of a Soul, Chapter 6: Trip to Rome, p. 87-89
Therese, Celine and their father continue on their pilgrimage to Rome, with Therese constantly watched by her "assessor" from the Bishop's residence, Father Reverony. Traveling through Switzerland, Therese was enchanted by the picturesque mountainside villages, and landscapes, thinking, "Later on, in the hour of trial, when enclosed in Carmel, I shall only be able to see a little corner of the sky; I will look back on today and be encouraged: the thought of God's majesty and greatness will put my own small troubles in their place..."
Visiting Milan, Celine and Therese were enthralled by Campo Santo and its cemetery whose marble statutes were carved so delicately that small images of children and widows seemed alive. Therese remarks at the state of an old gentleman, who, seeing their captivation, was himself unmoved. This seemed his nearly constant state, grumbling and miserable despite kind gestures from her father, Louis Martin. "How many different sorts of people we met, and how interesting the study of the world becomes when one is just about to leave it!" Therese wondered, as they entered the attractive, "yet melancholy" city of Venice.
